4 AM & Eyes of House Welcomes DJ Meltdown back to Connecticut!
Born and raised in Connecticut, seasoned in Chicago, DJ Meltdown is back and ready to tear up the dance floors of New England and the east coast!

Jason LaRosa, a.k.a DJ Meltdown, started out behind the decks at the young age of 13.  Born and raised in Middletown, CT, Meltdown has always had an infinate love for music.  At 12 he started to expand his music collection to fit a wide variety of musical tastes.  At 14 Meltdown purchased his first mixer and turntables from a local music shop, although vinyl was expensive, he managed to amass a collection to practice with.  By 16 he had gained the respect of his peers and the local community, performing at school dances, local parties, and securing a residency at Club 2001 in Newington, CT.

Carrying on through high school, DJ Meltdown turned out various mixtapes and performed at many local clubs and parties.  Brief stints at the Buttonwood Tree (Middletown, CT), Club Wildside (Meriden, CT), and The Blues Cafe (New Haven, CT) along with appearances at local record shops built a loyal fan base in New England.  By 1999 Meltdown had signed with Buggin’ Base of New York and was spinning at parties in Maine, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

In 2000 promoters brought DJ Meltdown to the limelight of Hartford, spinning at System and Vibe in Hartford, and Van Dome in New Haven.  Meltdown has made guest appearances at L’Action Discotheque in Montreal.  The end of 2000 brought another residency at The Vault in Meriden, CT.

In late 2000, DJ Meltown secured a spot working with Matt Read on WESU 88.1 FM in Middletown, CT.  He co-hosted a late night hip-hop show for about 6 months before moving on to a prime time spot working with DJ Berk and DJ Dork.  In 2003 DJ Meltdown teamed up back to back with DJ Big Steph, for a Saturday night 9pm-1am block that rocked the house.  With Steph playing hip-hop and Meltdown playing house and trance, they formed a college mix show that rivaled those of commercial stations.

Mid 2003 brought another residency to the table with DJ Meltdown spun at “Elmers Place”, a popular night spot on the Central Connecticut State University campus. In late 2003, the club and party scene was slow and DJ Meltdown decided to head for Chicago. DJ Meltdown produced remixes for local artists J-LP & Ray JBransin Anderson & electro-pop band Ask you in Gray.  He also provided remix support for some larger worldwide & regional acts such as European House Music phenomenon Funkerman ft. Shermanology, Australian pop diva Amy Pearson, German trance legends National Core, Canada’s foremost female DJ Kerrie Nation, and Seattle’s most popular electro-pop band Go Periscope.

While holding a Friday night residency at Southern Illinois University hotspot “Brian’s Place”, DJ Meltdown made guest appearances at popular Chicago nightspots like Ontourage Nightclub, Plush, The Department, D’Tox Ultra Lounge, and The Grand Central. Combining his always in demand remix abilities, his ear for scouting out the newest dance floor smashes, and his ability to blend them seamlessly with classic floorfillers has made DJ Meltdown a go to commodity for club owners and promoters alike.

Falafel Ad @ Subway - Chicago (Michigan Ave)

Falafel Ad @ Subway - Chicago (Michigan Ave)

Even though I consider myself an avid foodie, I don’t write about it that much (except on Yelp).  Most Friday’s I usually get a big lunch, either at Oasis Cafe, or Khyber Pass, or something else the office decides on.  Today everybody in the office was busy, so I ventured out to Subway.

I wandered in and had my sights set on an advertisement on the outside of the store for a new “Orchard Chicken Salad”, but as I got up to the front of the line a new advertisement crossed my path.  Subway was now offering a new “Falafel” sandwich, so I snapped a picture on my blackberry so I could chat it up later on Twitter and Facebook.  I just have to say that I LOVE falafel, however I had a falafel sandwich the day before, so I really wasn’t in the mood.  I was at the register paying for my chicken salad when I was approached by a man (Ed Zaibak) and he asked, “Did you just take a picture of that ad?”

A little confused and cautious, I answered, “Yes.”  He then handed me $5 and told me that he wanted me to try the sandwich.  It turns out that Ed helped Subway develop and test market the sandwich.  I went back, waited for them to make my falafel sandwich (I ordered it exactly as pictured), and then unwrapped it and took a bite.

Subway's Falafel Sandwich

Subway's Falafel Sandwich

It was way better than I had expected.  It had all the flavor, and also a cool, creamy cucumber sauce (say that five times fast).  The cucumber sauce was great, it paired well with the falafel, and had so much distinct flavor that I didn’t notice the absence of tahini and hummus.  The only complaint that I have is that the falafel were pre-fried, then microwaved, which made them a bit mushy.  I know subway doesn’t have deep fryers, so getting a “fresh” falafel is out of the question, but I wonder if they could somehow use the toaster to re-heat them without making them too mushy.

While I liked the sandwich, I’m no marketing expert, but I’m not sure that this concept will fly in Chicago (or elsewhere) at this price point.  The 6″ sandwich was $3.50 + tax.  I’m not sure of the profit margin on the sandwich, but I know that I can go to Mezza, Oasis or Sultans and grab a falafel with tahini & hummus on a pita for roughly $3.75 + tax.  I can get one for $3 if I’m in the Albany Park neighborhood.

Overall, I’m a fan, and if I’m at Subway i’d order it over other sandwiches (easily), however, there is some headway for progress.
